Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Singing and Acting courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2024: Space Odyssey

Embark on an out-of-this-world musical journey! Inspired by the songs of 'Return to the Forbidden Planet', unleash your creativity through improvisational techniques to create original, space-inspired monsters. Generate scene-work for your characters in a stellar musical performance that is truly cosmic!

Course components

  • Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a performance.
  • Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a project.
  • Performance Craft: Participate in improvised scene work and singing exercises to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.

Term 2, 2024: Rebel With A Cause

Channel the essence of musical theatre's most beloved characters! Discover how to use vocal and physical technique to ignite the passion and drive of characters such as Matilda, Oliver & Billy Elliot. Bring to life these iconic & rebellious characters with a musical presentation at the end of the term.

Course components

  • Voice and Song: Apply singing technique to develop confidence in front of a live audience.
  • Physical awareness: Develop basic dance skills through physical technique, exercises and movement training.
  • Performance Skill: Experiment with specific voice and physical choices to influence character, vocal quality and performance.

Term 3, 2024: On Broadway

Step into the spotlight and shine as you perform iconic Broadway musical numbers. Dive into the world of visual storytelling, as you explore techniques to devise original scenes inspired by the classics. Work with a NIDA Open teaching artist to craft your devised work and present a show-stopping musical story.

  • Creative Expression: Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques for musical performance.
  • Performance – Apply acting and singing technique to a short, devised musical presentation.

Term 4, 2024: Pure Imagination

Welcome to the dream factory of musical melodies! Develop your singing & acting technique as you explore scenes & songs from your favourite shows like Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz. Perform your favourite musical moment and delight your family and friends at the end of the course.

Course components

  •  Acting Technique: Explore characterisation and build technical skills through the application of contemporary acting techniques to a musical theatre performance. 
  • Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.
  • Performance: Apply acting, singing and movement practice to a short scripted, musical presentation.

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

  • Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
