Next Stage for Grades 4-6, Melbourne
Next Stage provides a supportive and creatively challenging environment for young artists serious about their artistic development. Courses run across a semester (two terms) and students work towards group performance outcomes. Course work includes an introduction to a variety of disciplines and stage craft in a holistic approach to performance training. Get ready for the Next Stage of your creative training!
Students engage in a personalised assessment and feedback process with their tutor at the end of every semester, providing them with the information and support they need to decide the next step in their creative education.
Semester 1, 2024: Devising: Soaring Stories
Let your imagination soar to new heights and take on the role of a master storyteller as you collaborate with your Next Stage ensemble to create your own unique stories from worlds afar. Working with a NIDA Open director explore contemporary storytelling techniques to devise an original theatre piece born from your creativity and share your story in a one off performance for family and friends at the end of the semester.
Course components
- Collaboration: Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a live presentation.
- Creative Voice: Assume a variety of roles in a creative process, generate new ideas for an original performance work.
- Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.
- Performance: Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short live presentation.
Semester 2, 2024: Scripts & Staging: Let's Play
What does it take to stage a play? From the first read, through rehearsals to performance, discover how directors and actors work together to bring the words in a script alive on stage. Work with a NIDA Open Teaching Artist, explore script analysis skills, develop believable characters and work as an ensemble in a professional theatre process across 16 weeks to rehearse and stage a short play. Share the excitement of performing with your Next Stage peers to an invited audience of family and friends.
Course components
- Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life a written text for live performance.
- Stage Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a scripted, live performance.
- Performance Skill: Experiment with specific voice and movement choices to influence character and performance.
- Rehearsal and Evaluation: Learn how to rehearse and gain feedback through a development and rehearsal process.
Prerequisites
- This is a 16 week course and students must be available to attend every session. End of course feedback and project participation is dependent on reliable attendance. Students can apply for attendance exemption in exceptional circumstances, applications must be made in advance to the supervising course manager.
- Students enrolled in this course must have participated in at least three NIDA term or holiday courses prior to attending this course OR be able to provide evidence of appropriate training at a comparable institution.

- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
