Creative Play provides an entertaining and supportive learning environment designed especially for growing artists and their families.
Learning framework
Each week students participate in play based dramatic exercises to engage the body, voice and imagination in creative, self-expression. We work with a different theme or focus on a specific area of creative development each term. Classes are tailored to the developmental and creative needs of individual children.
What is Creative Play?
Creative Play actively engages children and parents in storytelling and artistic practice through voice, movement and dramatic play based activities.
Children are supported by our experienced tutors to:
- Develop self-confidence
- Explore social contexts and group dynamics
- Develop voice and communication skills
- Discover the physical world and cultural landscapes
- Engage their personal creativity and artistry in a fun environment
Term 1, 2024: Tall and Small
Uncover big ideas and tiny surprises as you explore your imagination. Fly with fairies at the bottom of your garden, walk with tall and small animals, or greet a giant at the top of the bean stalk. Engage in storytelling and movement exercises that explore the physical world and imaginative storytelling.

Term 2, 2024: Sounds of the Seasons
Shhh…listen very closely. What can you hear? Whether it's splashing at the beach on a summers day, or stomping and crunching autumn leaves, the world is alive with unique sounds and experiences. Explore each season through sound, movement and song and use your voice and body to create storytelling soundscapes and exciting adventures.
Course focus
- Be introduced to vocal and physical communication, exploring the natural world.
Term 3, 2024: Spectacular Stories!
Participate in creative play workshops inspired by the language, images and themes in the books from the 2024 National Book Week. Explore the joy of reading as you delve into different worlds and walk in the shoes of colourful characters straight from the pages of some of this years finest stories for young children.

Term 4, 2024: On the Farm
Cockle doodle do! This term we're off to the farm in search of fun filled adventures. Meet the animals, run through the paddocks and step into the shoes of a farmer to feed the baby ducklings. Explore the farms sights, sounds and smells through role-play, song and storytelling each week with your NIDA Open friends.

- Create stories with your NIDA friends as you discover your place in the world and explore your imagination.

- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothing they can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Closed-in shoes are needed. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring a bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
