Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Public Speaking and Presenting courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Presentation Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Staging

Term 1, 2024: Ready, Set - Present!

Unlock your spontaneity and elevate your skills as a quick-thinker and confident speaker! Explore how improvisation can develop your ability to be in the moment, create engaging content, and build unshakeable confidence to captivate your audience. Get ready to speak with creativity and boldness, to be at your best!  

Course components

  • Improvisation: Learn improvisation techniques to enhance your performance.
    Confidence: Develop your confidence when speaking in front of an audience.
    Presenting: Understand and apply live presenting techniques.

Term 2, 2024: Let The Word Be Heard

Extend your public speaking skills through the art of slam poetry! Explore the slam poet techniques of rhythm, repetition, wordplay and imagery, as you discover how voice and body come together to create a powerful performance. Engage the imaginations of your audience as you present a memorable speech with impact.

Course components

  • Vocal Expression: Investigate effective vocal technique. 
    Voice: Learn power-charged vocal warm ups,  adaptable to a range of situations.
    Language and text: Using punctuation, meter, rhythm and rhyme, analyse and explore the spoken word in live performance

Term 3, 2024: Storytelling Legends

The ultimate collision of fact and fiction unfolds, as you become the Tour Guide through a night at the museum! Escape the Egyptians and delight the dinosaurs with your spontaneity and imagination, using presenting skills and storytelling techniques to bring their world to life again. Have your audience on their edge of their seats, as you lead them through a fantastical journey of epic proportions!

Course components

  • Communication: Learn strategies to deliver powerful speeches that will engage a variety of audiences.
    Writing for Presentation: Discover how to effectively research content and use it to construct a speech.
    Storytelling: Explore stories, ideas and adventures through group and individual exercises.

Term 4, 2024: Inspired Minds

Embark on a journey of inspirational expression! Discover the key to making impactful speeches as you explore techniques used by iconic speakers. Apply text analysis and learn how presenting techniques are used to engage an audience. Ignite your ability to inspire and lead, one word at a time.

Course components

  • Text Analysis: Interpret and bring to life an existing text for live presentation 
    Presenting: Understand and apply live presenting techniques.
    Rehearsal and Evaluation: Learn how to practice and gain feedback through a development and rehearsal process.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.

  • Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
  • Discount is not available online. Please book over the phone by calling the office on 1300 450 417 to receive the discount.
  • If students do not attend all four terms, the discount is no longer valid.
