Learning framework

Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.

Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.

NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:

Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique

Term 1, 2024: No Script? No Worries!

All of our favourite shows once started as ideas on a page, so it can't be that hard, right..? Discover how improvisation for screen can shape character and story, and create your next binge-worthy obsession... on the spot... in front of the camera... ACTION! 

Course components

  • Spontaneity - Explore stories, ideas and scene work through improvisation.
  • Creative Expression – Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Collaboration – Incorporate and develop shared ideas into live and captured screenwork.

Term 2, 2024: Monster Madness...the rehearsal

Develop your physical and vocal skills as we encounter the monsters of the silver screen. Taking inspiration from screen legend Andy Serkis, dive into the rehearsal process and discover how actors bring these creatures to life. Inhabit new worlds as you explore the technical requirements of vocal and physical transformation and present your scenes to an audience at the end of the course. 

Course components

  • Physical Awareness – Practice and apply fundamental movement technique for the actor including alignment, presence and spatial relationships for screen
  • Voice - Introduction to how the voice works, exploration of fundamental vocal performance techniques. Applying voice technique to screen work.
  • Performance – Rehearse and present a short live-recorded performance.

Term 3, 2024: Mystery Mayhem

Enola Holmes, The Doctor, Detective Pikachu? Put the great on-screen detectives under the microscope and craft your own mystery adventure. Investigate the foundations of collaboration, devising and storytelling as you write, rehearse and shoot key scenes. Present your final case to friends and family.

  • Screen Performance Craft – Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.
  • Creative Expression – Participate in fun and engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
  • Collaboration – Incorporate and develop shared ideas into a project.

Term 4, 2024:  Out of this World (Inside the Frame)

Get ready for take-off as you explore out-of-this-world texts from your favorite big screen blockbusters. Discover the given circumstances of distant planets and apply screen acting techniques to a variety of scenes. Choose your favorite moments from term and share with friends and family at the end of your course.

Course components

  • Acting Technique: Learn and practice acting to camera techniques.
  • Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
  • Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.

Important information

  • Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
  • Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
  • If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
  • NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
  • Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
