NIDA Online: Writing for Performance - Finding your Story
For Adults (18+)
Level: Core Technique
Draw upon your personal creativity and discover techniques to create writing for performance. Join an interactive online community of budding writers to collaborate in writing tasks and discussions around set readings. Participate in an online text analysis workshop with professional actors and director. Engage in collaborative feedback and experience your words come to life in a reading of your work.
Course Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the tools of drama including character, units of action, conflict and subtext
- Understand the collaborative process between writers, actors and directors in developing an idea
- Respond to tutor and peer feedback and apply it to your writing process
- Create an original piece of work for performance
Time Commitment
- Face to face via Zoom: 2.5 hour sessions, twice weekly x 4 weeks
- Pre-course work: 45 min reading & written response
- Self-directed learning: at least 60 min writing activity between each session.
Resources Required to Participate
- Desktop, laptop or mobile with microphone and webcam
- Word processing application (Google Docs or Word)
- Internet connection
- Notepad and pencil (non-essential)

- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses, even when working from home. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please have to hand a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
