NIDA eLearning: Model Making

Level: Core Techniques

Learn the process of model making for theatrical set design through blended on-line and face-to-face study. The course introduces elementary design techniques, tools and materials through a holistic model-making project. Components and concepts increase in complexity and degree of difficulty over six elements of study. The first 4 elements are completed through NIDA’s online learning platform across approximately 8 hours of independent, supported study. The course culminates in 13 hours of classroom based study at NIDA’s internationally renowned Kensington facility.

Course components

  • Introduction to tools, materials and the design process.
  • Form shapes and structures in whitecard as part of the online elements
  • Apply colour & texture during the intensive workshops to create a final model

Outcomes

  • Understand the purpose of model making and how it can aid the design process by realising theatrical designs at scale.
  • Explore the fundamentals of drafting, cutting and gluing using a variety of common model making tools and materials.
  • Explore the fundamentals of painting, rendering, and 'breaking down'
  • Develop a completed scale set model piece

Course Delivery and dates

  • Elements 1-4: to be completed online
  • Elements 5-6: Delivered face-to-face at the NIDA Campus.

Prerequisites

The course is an introduction to model making and the tools and methods of design. While the course is introductory, some previous experience in theatrical design or art making is recommended.

The safe use of tools and materials is the responsibility of the student.

  • Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
