Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Drama courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Performance
Term four Script Work and Staging
Term 1, 2024: On Your Feet
Work with a NIDA Open Teaching Artist to develop short and long form improvisation techniques. Explore character and spontaneity through classroom exercises and share your work with friends and family at the end of term.
Course components
- Spontaneity: Develop spontaneity and performance craft and apply it to long and short form improvisation.
Craft: Participate in improvised scene work to develop basic acting and improvisation technique.
Ensemble: Work as part of a team to achieve a shared goal through improvised performance.
Term 2, 2024: On Broadway
Take your turn in the spotlight and perform in well-known Broadway musical numbers from The Lion King to Les Misérables. Use visual storytelling techniques to create short original scenes inspired by Broadway musicals. Develop a short musical theatre presentation for family and friends.
Course components
- Text Interpretation: Bring to life a short written musical text for live performance.
Voice and Song: Apply singing technique to develop confidence in front of a live audience.
Staging: Consider staging techniques and learn musical performance stagecraft.
Term 3, 2024: Art Attack
Bring the art gallery to life and transform paintings into performance as you interpret 19th century art and create a new devised work for the stage. Inspired by the masters of post-impressionism develop playbuilding techniques and collaborate to craft dynamic original scenes. Invite your family and friends to step into the picture at the end of term.
Course components
- Contemporary practice: Tell creative stories using devising techniques to create your own performance work.
Collaboration: Collaborate with your peers as you work together to explore different theatre-making styles.
Stage Craft: Discover the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance
Term 4, 2024: Quiet on Set!
Work with a NIDA Open Teaching Artist to develop the inner life of a character and develop the technical skills to shine on screen. Explore character development and screen acting techniques in practical exercises to ready yourself to be on set. Shoot scenes from contemporary film and television and present your favorite moments at the end of term.
Course components
- Screen Technique: Practice acting to camera techniques. Discover the difference between live and recorded performance craft.
Character Development: Embody a range of characters and explore their objectives.
Performance: Apply acting on screen techniques for recorded performance.

- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
