Directing for the Filmmaker
For adults 18 years +
Level: Beginner
Develop the fundamentals of screen direction. Identify how to develop a concept and collaborate with a creative team. Explore how to tell a story visually, how to construct scenes and develop your camera skills with your fellow students.
Course components
- Explore cinematic story telling including how sound, image and time converge to create powerful stories.
- Develop your understanding of pre-production, production and post-production processes.
- Build your skills in constructing scenes and directing actors for the screen.
Outcomes
- An ability to cast, rehearse and direct film scenes.
- Awareness of visual story telling components such as shot size and staging.
- Understanding of cinematic conventions such as concept and premise, diagetic vs non diagetic elements and cinematic styles.

- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. - Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
