Practical skill-based learning in the performing arts led by industry experts with a focus on personal and creative development.
Learning framework
Each term we focus on a specific area of performance practice to ensure students have a varied experience and learn a range of essential creative skills.
Students are able to join us at the start of any term during the year.
NIDA Open Acting on Screen courses are designed across a four term structure within the following learning framework:
Term one Improvisation and Performance Craft
Term two Voice and Movement
Term three Devising and Contemporary Practice
Term four Script Work and Technique
Term 1, 2024: The Actor's Choice
Use an AI generated film script and challenge your creative instinct. Explore improvisation and character analysis techiques to develop your understanding of how the actor's choice can shape a performance. Track your choices across multiple takes and see how your human instincts can enhance computer generated ideas.
Course components
- Spontaneity: Utilise improvisation skills to build a screen performance.
- Acting technique: Explore characterisation through building technical skills such as making and accepting
- Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
Term 2, 2024: Soundscape/Retake
‘ADR’ in film and television is the process of re-recording dialogue to enhance sound quality. Explore voice skills for screen performance and apply live vocal technique to your recorded scenes. Develop your ADR skills and create the best sound effects to save the take.
Course components
- Voice - Introduction to how the voice works, exploration of fundamental vocal performance techniques.
- Performance – Apply acting, voice and movement practice to a short, live presentation.
- Creative Expression – Participate in engaging acting exercises to develop new creative ideas with others.
Term 3, 2024: Live in 3.. 2.. 1..
Get noticed and 'shine on stream' as you learn practical skills in online & TV presenting. Devise and shoot your own lifestyle segment, develop skills to host your own TV show, and create an original character to star in a mockumentary style performance.
Course components
- Collaboration: Work in a group to incorporate new, shared ideas into a live recorded performance.
- Presenting: Understand and apply TV presenting and interview techniques.
- Character Development: Develop a unique character for recorded performance.
Term 4, 2024: Act Your Age
Be the best 'you' on screen and develop your confidence in front of the camera. Explore performance techniques for screen and shoot a range of scenes from contemporary film and TV scripts. Learn how to bring yourself to the character to deliver an authentic performance.
Course components
- Acting Technique: Practice and refine acting to camera techniques.
- Text Analysis: Apply screen-acting skills to analyse and interpret the events of a scene.
- Screen Performance Craft: Consider the elements that contribute to the physical realisation of a performance.
Important information
- Please read our Cancellation and Transfer Policy.
- Flights and Accommodation: From time to time we may need to cancel an advertised course. Before booking flights and accommodation for travel to attend a NIDA Open course, please contact the NIDA Open office to confirm if your course will proceed as planned. NIDA does not accept liability for any associated costs of attendance or cancellation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing you can move in for all drama and performance related courses. Clothing that restricts movement is inappropriate.
- Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
- Please bring along a pen, notebook and bottle of water to all classes.
- If you are running late to collect your child, please call NIDA reception on 02 9697 7600. NIDA will only provide supervision during advertised course times.
- NIDA staff will supervise students in courses for Grades 3 to 10 during breaks. These students will not be permitted to leave the advertised venue without parental permission.
- Students in courses for Grades 11 and 12 will not be supervised during breaks and are free to leave the venue at designated break times should they wish.
Enrol for the full year in advance to receive a 15% discount off the full price!
- Discount is only applicable when booking all four terms within the same calendar year.
- Discount is not available online. Please book over the phone by calling the office on 1300 450 417 to receive the discount.
- If students do not attend all four terms, the discount is no longer valid.

Take the James Ruse Drive exit off the M4. Entry is via Victoria Road and then follow Railway Drive to the Sir Ian and Nancy Turbott Auditorium.
MEETING PONT
Please meet outside the glass doors of the auditorium. There is a large rusted sculpture outside this building for reference. A member of the NIDA Open staff will then take students to their Room.
Please park in the allocated blue bays across the campus. P4 is the closest for NIDA Open meeting point (off Railway St).
Public Transport
Buses stop right outside our campus on Victoria Road, Rydalmere (opposite Rippon Avenue). Bus routes include M52, 520, 521, 523, 524 and 525.
